Natural. Sincere. Heartfelt. Hilarious. Absolutely the way I like to capture a wedding day. Emails like the one above will always get my attention. Ed and Emelie's wedding day was all of these things and so much more.
A wedding at Chaucer Barn is always going to be a good one. It's an absolute gem, hidden away in the Norfolk countryside, just a little inland from Sheringham near the North Norfolk coast.
The happy couple had the most beautiful outdoor ceremony followed by the most amazing food and drink on the lawns.
Ed and Emelie had filled the space with vintage funfair games including a Coconut Shy, Test Your Strength Striker and Splat the Rat. These were great fun to photograph. But I didn't take hold of the hammer and test my strength on this occasion, lest I showed anyone up!
This being a Swedish wedding, there was also a game called Kubb. Wikipedia describes it as "a lawn game where the objective is to knock over wooden blocks (kubbar) by throwing wooden batons (kastpinnar) at them. Kubb can be described as a combination of bowling and horseshoes".
I didn't pick up on the rules of the game. I was too busy trying not to get brained by coconuts from one end of the garden and massive blocks of wood at the other end.
Surprises from airborne blocks of wood and stone fruits aside, there was another surprise for me at this wedding with a Swedish twist on the expression 'You May Now Kiss the Bride'. During the toasts and speeches, of which, at Swedish weddings, there are many, each time the bride or groom left the room, queues formed to get in line and kiss the partner who remained. Traditionally, once the bride makes an exit, all the women will get up to kiss the groom and vice versa. There were of course a few people who decided they would sneak a kiss with both the bride and groom, regardless of their usual proclivity!
The toasts and speeches went on late into the night, interspersed with a most enjoyable custom of drinking Schnapps and belting out silly songs. The dance floor, after all of this fun and copious amounts of alcohol, was inevitably jam-packed all night, late into the night.
Definitely one to remember. Here's just a small taste of what I saw that day - enjoy!
